Professional Development for Doulas

Professional development is incredibly important for doulas. As a doula, you are responsible for providing support and guidance to couples during one of the most important events of their lives. In many cases, this support goes beyond simply providing physical assistance during childbirth, and can include providing emotional support and helping to explain medical procedures and options to the couple.

By continuing to develop your skills and knowledge as a doula, you ensure that you are providing the best possible support to your clients. You may learn about new techniques or tools that can help you better support your clients, or gain additional knowledge about different stages of childbirth that can help you identify potential complications early on.

Continuing education also helps you stay up-to-date with the latest research and recommendations related to childbirth, which can be invaluable in providing evidence-based support and advocating for your clients’ needs.

There are several avenues for professional development available to doulas, including:

1. Childbirth Education: Consider taking specialized childbirth education classes to supplement your doula training. This will help deepen your knowledge of the physical and emotional aspects of childbirth and help you provide more comprehensive support to your clients.

2. Attend Conferences/Workshops: Attending training sessions and events, such as workshops or conferences, is one of the best ways to gain knowledge on the latest trends, techniques, and research in the childbirth field. This will also give you an opportunity to network with other professionals. These are some conferences coming up this year: DONA, Health Connect One, and the National Breastfeeding Conference.

3. Mental Health and Perinatal Mood Disorders : Doulas can also take courses on Perinatal Mental Health, the postpartum experience, and available resources integrating with maternal mood disorders.

4. Business Development: Consider courses that help you develop business management skills in setting and growing your Private practice – setting rates, branding, designing client workflows, etc.

5. Continued Certification: Join regular certification training programs designed for doulas offered by certifying organizations, it allows doulas to sharpen their skills, stay update with the standards, and trends in their field of practice. GPS Doulas offers continue education opportunities. We just held a TENS Unit training last week. Sign up for our newsletter to get more info of upcoming CEU opportunities.

In conclusion, professional development is crucial for doulas because it helps ensure that you are providing the highest quality care to your clients, and that you are equipped to help them navigate the complexities of childbirth with confidence and compassion.

Till next time, keep on duoling!
